Customize Your CorelDRAW Workspace

Overview

I get frequent questions regarding customizing the CorelDRAW X3 workspace. Here are instructions for the top three most frequently asked customization questions, but before I can show the list, you need to know that Smart Designer X3 can automatically set up your workspace and color palette settings for you. To do this, go to the Smart Designer X3 “ Command Center ” and choose “Workspace and Options.” Next you will need to select “Load Suggested Default Document Settings.” Follow these steps only if you want Smart Designer to make the choices for you.

Instructions

For those people who want to manually set up their own workspace, follow these instructions:

  1. If the CorelDRAW X3 Welcome Screen, otherwise known as the “Bully” screen, appears every time you launch CorelDRAW, uncheck the box “Show this Welcome Screen at Start Up” to keep this from happening and click on the “New Graphic” icon.
  2. The default font in CorelDRAW X3 is Arial and the default font in CorelDRAW 12 is Avant Garde. If you want to change your default font or the font within a document, make sure your new document is completely blank and select the “Text Tool” from your toolbox. Next, choose the font you like from the property bar. The “Text Attributes” window will appear. Make sure “Artistic Text” is selected and click on “OK.” If you choose Spooky as your font, it will now be your default font every time you select your Text Tool and begin to type.
  3. The default size for fonts is 24 points. It may make sense for some users to increase the default font size to 100 or 200 points. When it comes to font point size, 100 is equal to about 1 inch and 200 is equal to about 2 inches. Select the “Text Tool” from your toolbox. Choose 100 or 200 from the drop-down font size list on the property bar. The “Text Attributes” window will appear. Make sure “Artistic Text” is selected and click on “OK.”
  4. In order to make these workspace changes permanent, you will need to select “Save Settings as Defaults” from the “Tools” menu.
