This section should provide useful information in helping you work through common issues encountered with our software and clip art packages. If you continue to have problems fell free to send a request for support so we can help you resolve any issues you are having as quickly as possible.

• CorelDRAW 11 or 12
  • Installation Problems
    • "Installer Will Not Launch" Error

      Problem: The Smart Designer installation program will not launch when you insert the Smart Designer Installation CD.

      Solution: The auto-run feature for your CD-ROM drive has been turned off or you have previously installed Smart Designer. Double-click on the file Intro in the root directory of the CD-ROM using Windows Explorer or My Computer.

    • "CorelDRAW Not Found" Error

      Problem: You receive a CorelDRAW not found error prior to installation.

      Solution: You must have installed a full version of CorelDRAW 9 or 10 in order to install Smart Designer 10. Smart Designer is not compatible with CorelDRAW 9 Office Edition. This is a limited version of CorelDRAW without the necessary supporting files to run Smart Designer.

    • "Crash During Installation

      Problem: Either your CD-ROM is damaged or you have not turned off your virus protection software.

      Solution: Turn off your virus protection software and remove your installation CD. Check the bottom of the CD for scratches or residue. If your CD appears damaged, call Digital Art Solutions Tech Support at 480-894-2953 for a replacement CD. If the CD is not damaged, attempt the installation with your virus protection turned off.

    • "Not Enough Disk Space" Message

      Problem: Your receive an message telling you that you do not have enough disk space to install CorelDRAW or Smart Designer.

      Solution: You must free up some space on your hard drive before attempting to install the software. Try deleting your temporary Internet files from the Internet Explorer Internet Options menu or uninstall any unnecessary programs.

  • Activation Code Problems
    • Prompted to Call DAS for an Activation Code During Web Activation

      Problem:You attempted to activate Smart Designer over the web and you were prompted to call Digital Art Solutions for an activation code.

      Solution: You are limited to 3 web activations per year (starting at your original invoice date). After 3 yearly web activations, you will be prompted to call Digital Art Solutions to receive any new codes.

    • "Activation Code Number Does Not Work

      Problem: You called for an activation code and Smart Designer will not accept your new code.

      Solution:Make sure that you are entering zeros instead of the letter O or vice versa. You may also have given the operator an incorrect location code. Call Digital Art Solutions Tech Support at 480-894-2953.

    • Can Not Activate Over Web

      Problem: You are attempting to activate Smart Designer over the web and cannot access the activation web page.

      Solution: Make sure that you are connected to the Internet. In addition, you must enable any firewall software on your computer allow Smart Designer to access the Internet. In addition you must have Internet Explorer version 4 or higher in order to use this feature. If you still cannot activate over the Internet call Digital Art Solutions Tech Support at 480-894-2953.

    • Web Activation Page Will Not Accept Control ID Numbers

      Problem: You are attempting to activate Smart Designer over the web and the activation web page will not accept your Control ID numbers.

      Solution:Make sure that you have entered both numbers exactly as they are printed in the inside front cover of your manual. If you still cannot activate over the Internet call Digital Art Solutions Tech Support at 480-894-2953.

  • Problems Starting Smart Designer 10.11
    • "Demo Has Expired" Message

      Problem:You receive a message indicating that your Smart Designer demo period has expired.

      Solution: The Smart Designer Demo period will expire 30 days from your installation day. See page 22 for instructions on activating Smart Designer. If your demo period has expired the first time you launch the program, you must turn the Regional Setting to English (United States) in the Windows system Control Panel. Canadian and European settings place the day before month causing Smart Designer to expire prematurely.

    • Set Back Date on My Computer and Smart Designer Will Not Load

      Problem: You set back the date on your computer in order to get more time on your demo period and now Smart Designer will not load.

      Solution: By tampering with your date setting, Smart Designer's demo period will expire prematurely. This is part of Smart Designer's copy protection scheme. You must activate Smart Designer to continue using the program. See page 22 for instructions on activating Smart Designer.

    • After Reformatting Hard Drive, Prompted for New Activation Code

      Problem: You reformatted your hard drive and are now prompted for a new activation code after installing Smart Designer.

      Solution: Part of Smart Designer's activation information was deleted when you reformatted your drive. See page 22 for instructions on re-activating Smart Designer.

    • Prompted for New Activation Code After Installing on New Computer

      Problem: You installed Smart Designer on a new computer and are prompted for a new activation code.

      Solution: Each individual computer must be activated separately. Your activation code will only unlock a single computer. See page 22 for instructions on receiving an additional activation code for Smart Designer.

    • Nothing Happens When Smart Designer Icon is Double-Clicked

      Problem: You double-click the Smart Designer Desktop Icon and nothing happens.

      Solution: Either CorelDRAW is not properly installed or Smart Designer did not complete installing. Launch CorelDRAW by itself to verify that CorelDRAW is working properly. Double-click the Smart Designer desktop icon with CorelDRAW open. If Smart Designer does not load, reinstall Smart Designer. Make sure that your virus protection software has been turned off before reinstalling. You do not have to uninstall the previous version before reinstalling.

    • Get "Unable to Subclass Window" Error Message When Starting Smart Designer 10.11

      Problem: You double-click the Smart Designer Desktop Icon and you get a message “Unable to Subclass Window” and the program will not finish loading into CorelDRAW.

      Solution: There may be a timing glitch due to a slower processor on your computer. Smart Designer and CorelDRAW need to open at the same time and link together. Typically this error occurs when you have multiple programs open or you have a slower processor (Under 800 Mhz). Close CorelDRAW and any other open programs and try launching Smart Designer again. If this does not work, launch CorelDRAW by itself and open a new document. Double-click on the Smart Designer icon on your desktop to load Smart Designer and link the two programs.

    • You have Stahl's Drawmate Installed and Smart Designer will Not Open

      Problem: You have Stahl’s Drawmate 9 or 10 installed on your computer, and Smart Designer will not open.

      Solution:When Drawmate was installed, it modified some of the source code for CorelDRAW. This modification may prevent Smart Designer from running. You must completely uninstall Drawmate and CorelDRAW. Reinstall CorelDRAW to restore the modified files and launch Smart Designer. You may need to reset the Smart Designer menus in the Smart Designer welcome screen by clicking on Reset Menus. Drawmate and Smart Designer can not be installed at the same time on any computer.

  • Menu and Display Problems
    • Graphics in CorelDRAW Appear Shaded or Dull

      Problem: Your graphics in CorelDRAW appear shaded or dull. Colors do not appear solid and have a dotted pattern.

      Solution: The display settings for your monitor are set to 256 colors or lower. You must change your display setting in the Windows Control Panel. Right mouse-click on any blank space on your Windows desktop. Select the Properties option. Under the Settings option you should change your High Color (16 bit) or True Color (32 bit). Your Screen Area should be a minimum of 800 x 600 pixels. You may be prompted to restart your computer after applying the changes.

    • Color Palette is Gone

      Problem: Your color palette has disappeared from the right side of your screen.

      Solution: It is possible to undock your color palette and reposition it as a floating window on your screen. If you click on the X on the palette, it will close the palette and disappear. To restore the palette, select a color palette (Pantone Matching System Corel 8 is recommended) by selecting Color Palettes from the Window menu. If the palette appears as a floating window, drag the window to right side of your screen with your left mouse button. It will dock against the right side of the main CorelDRAW window.

    • CorelDRAW Toolbox or Property Bar is Missing

      Problem:Your CorelDRAW Toolbar or Property Bar has vanished.

      Solution: Your have accidentally undocked your bar or have unchecked the option for viewing the bar. Right mouse click on the blank grey area next to the Help menu. Verify that your Toolbox or Property Bar option is checked. Check any desired bar that you would like to view in your workspace. If the bar or toolbox appears as a floating window, drag the window to the desired location of your screen with your left mouse button. It will dock against the main CorelDRAW window. You can press F8 on your keyboard when launching CorelDRAW to reset your workspace back to the factory defaults and restore your Toolbox or Property Bar.

    • Smart Designer or CorelDRAW Workspace is Corrupted

      Problem: Your Smart Designer or CorelDRAW workspace is completely out of order or is displaying gibberish.

      Solution: It is possible to accidentally rearrange your workspace or corrupt a CorelDRAW workspace. You can restore the workspace back to the original condition. Make sure Smart Designer and CorelDRAW are closed. Launch CorelDRAW by itself while holding down the F8 key on your keyboard. When prompted to overwrite the current workspace with the default workspace, select Yes. When the new workspace appears, uncheck the box Show this Welcome Screen at Startup. Select Options from the Tools menu. Under Workspace, highlight Smart Designer 10 and select the Delete button. Exit CorelDRAW. Select the Digital Art Solutions program group by selecting your Start Button and Programs. Select Reset Smart Designer Menus. Launch Smart Designer to restore the Smart Designer menus in the default CorelDRAW workspace.

  • CorelDRAW Problems
    • CorelDRAW Partially Loads Then Hangs Up

      Problem: You launch CorelDRAW and the software partially loads and then hangs up at about 60%.

      Solution: You must have a print driver installed in order for CorelDRAW to load properly. End task on CorelDRAW by entering Ctrl/Alt/Delete simultaneously on your keyboard. Select CorelDRAW from the list and end task on the program. Install a print driver for your computer and reboot. You may also experience this problem if your printer is turned off or you have a networked printer as you default printer. Turn on your printer or change you default printer in your Windows System Control Panel to a printer that is directly connected to your computer. You can choose a different printer in the CorelDRAW Print windows after changing the default printer. For more information on this problem consult the http://venus.corel.com/kbsearch/.

    • Can't Figure Out How to Do Something in CorelDRAW

      Problem:You are stuck trying to figure out how to do something in CorelDRAW

      Solution: CorelDRAW has both a Tutorial and Help Index. Try the Help Index first from the Help menu. If you are experiencing great difficulty in CorelDRAW, we strongly recommend running through the CorelTUTOR from the Help menu.

    • Resize Object with Outline and Object Distorts

      Problem:Your object or text has an outline. When you resize the graphic, the outline stays the same width and distorts the image.

      Solution:The outline has not been set to resize with the graphic. Right mouse-click on the object or group of objects. Select Properties and the Outline tab. Check the box for Scale with Image and click Apply.

    • Tried Coloring Clip Art or Scanned Image and Will Not Color

      Problem:You try to ungroup and color an image in CorelDRAW and nothing happens.

      Solution:Your image is most likely a scan or bitmap. It must be converted to vectored line art before you can color it. To verify that you image is bitmap, select the Wireframe view in CorelDRAW. A bitmap will display as a shaded grey box with a black outline. A vectored graphic will display as a set of black outlines.

    • CorelDRAW Keeps Crashing

      Problem: During operation, CorelDRAW frequently crashes.

      Solution:There are several reasons that CorelDRAW may crash. These steps can be taken in order to get CorelDRAW to function properly. 1) You do not have enough RAM or processing power on your computer. Check the minimum system requirements on pages 12 and 13. Upgrade your computer system or purchase a new computer. 2) You do not have the latest version of CorelDRAW installed. Consult pages 20 and 21 for information on installing CorelDRAW service packs. 3) Your hard drive is badly fragmented. Consult the Windows help system under your Start Button for instructions for defraggmenting your hard drive. 4) CorelDRAW did not install properly. Uninstall and reinstall CorelDRAW. 5) Other software may be conflicting with CorelDRAW. Consult Corel Tech Support at www.corel.com. 6) You have a serious problem with your Windows operating system. Consult technical support for your computer vendor.

    • Crash Recovery Wizard Opens in CorelDRAW

      Problem: The CorelDRAW 10 Recovery Wizard keeps coming up in CorelDRAW.

      Solution: This feature was designed to allow you to save any file in the event that CorelDRAW crashes. Follow the instructions on-screen to save your work. See the previous solution for the proper operation of CorelDRAW.

    • Can Not Save File in CorelDRAW

      Problem: You cannot save a file in CorelDRAW. You get an error message when attempting to save.

      Solution: This is a bug in CorelDRAW 9 or 10 that occurs with some files. You do not have to lose your work. Export your image using the CMX (Corel Presentation Exchange) option. Import the file back into CorelDRAW and try saving the imported file.

    • Text Does Not Stay On Path When File is Opened or Imported

      Problem: You are opening or importing a file and the text has detached from the path.

      Solution: This is an intermittent bug in both CorelDRAW versions 9 and 10 when importing or opening files save down to an older version of CorelDRAW. You must ungroup the design, select the text and reattach it to the path using the Fit Text to Path feature in the Text menu.

  • Font Problems
    • No Fonts in Font List

      Problem:You launch CorelDRAW and no fonts appear in your fonts list.

      Solution:Too many fonts are installed on your system. Once you exceed CorelDRAW's font limit (around 900 fonts), the software will stop loading fonts when it is launched. You must reduce the number of fonts on your system by deleting fonts in your Windows Control Panel. Do not delete any font highlighted in red, as these are your Windows system fonts. We highly recommend installing and using the Bitstream Font Navigator software that was included with CorelDRAW to install and uninstall fonts. Bitstream Font Navigator was installed with CorelDRAW 10 and can be accessed from the Utilities menu. CorelDRAW 9 users must install Bitstream Font Navigator during a custom installation (see pages 14 and 15). You can install Bitstream Font Navigator after installing CorelDRAW 9. Perform a Custom Installation and select only the option for installing Font Navigator under Productivity Tools.

    • Can Not Install PostScript Type 1 Fonts

      Problem:You can not install Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts.

      Solution: You must use Adobe Type Manager to install Type 1 fonts. This software does not come with your Windows operating system unless you have Windows 2000. You can download Adobe Type Manager Lite free of charge from www.adobe.com.

    • Open File and Get Font Substitution Message

      Problem:You get a font substitution error when opening a design or template in CorelDRAW.

      Solution: The font required for your design or template has not been installed. You can either substitute another font style or install the proper font. If the file is from a Smart Designs CD-ROM product, consult the manual for that product in order to properly install the fonts required for the templates.

    • Can Not Edit Text

      Problem: You ungroup the design and cannot edit the text.

      Solution: The text in the design has been converted to curves or is a drawing. You will not be able to edit this text. The only solution is to delete the existing text elements and replace them with new text. Note: Some designs in the Designs category in Smart Templates Volume 1 have non-editable text. These designs can be imported and used as clip art, but cannot be edited as templates.

  • Problems with Smart Templates
    • Click on Template and Nothing Happens

      Problem: You select a Smart Template in the Smart Designer Templates feature and nothing happens or you get a “template not installed” message.

      Solution: Your template has not been installed to your hard drive. Consult the manual for your templates volume for installation instructions. You may also place the CD for your template volume in your drive to access the template from the CD (this feature does not work with Smart Templates Volume 1).

    • Click on Template and Receive Font Substitution Message

      Problem: You get a font substitution error when opening a Smart Template in CorelDRAW.

      Solution: The font required for your design or template has not been installed. You can either substitute another font style or install the proper font. If the file is from a Smart Designs CD-ROM product, consult the manual for that product in order to properly install the fonts required for the templates.

    • Can Not Edit Text in Template

      Problem: You are not given the option of editing the text in the template

      Solution: The text in the design has been locked or has been converted to curves. You can manually ungroup the design and attempt to edit the text.

    • Can Not Import Clip Art Image into Template

      Problem: You are not given the option of changing a clip art element in a template.

      Solution: This element is a locked element in the design. After changing the text in the template, ungroup the design. You can manually delete and replace the clip art.

    • Can Not Locate Template from Smart Templates 1 Binder

      Problem: You can not locate a template from the Smart Templates Volume 1 binder in the Smart Designer Templates feature.

      Solution: Your template is a sample design and cannot be edited as a Smart Template. Sample designs are located in the tabbed section entitled Designs. Insert your Smart Designer 10 CD in your drive. You can access the designs as clip art using the Import from Clip Art Browser feature. The category name will correspond to the tabs in the Smart Templates Volume 1 binder.

  • Problems Importing or Opening Files
    • Get Database Error When Using Import from Clip Art Browser, Click Art Rollup or Organizer in Smart Designer 10.11

      Problem: You get a database error when using the Import from Clip Art Browser, Click Art Rollup or Organizer.

      Solution: The database drivers that are required for these features are not installed. Normally these files are part of your Windows operating system. To install the database drivers, insert the Smart Designer 10 installation CD in your drive. Select the Digital Art Solutions program group by selecting your Start Button and Programs. Select Install Database Drivers.

    • Smart Designs CD is Not Recognized in Clip Art Browser or ClickArt Rollup

      Problem: A Smart Designs brand CD-ROM is not recognized in the Import from Clip Art Browser or ClickArt Rollup.

      Solution: The drive letter for your primary CD-ROM drive does not match the drive letter in the Import from Clip Art Browser or ClickArt Rollup Features. Open the Import from Clip Art Browser or ClickArt Rollup and select the correct drive letter from the drop down list.

    • Bad Disk Error When Importing from EPS Clip Art Library or Smart Templates 2

      Problem: You receive a bad disk error when attempting to import artwork from the EPS Clip Art Library or Smart Templates Volume 2 CDs.

      Solution: You are attempting to import from the Mac version of the CD-ROM. Eject the CD and insert the Windows version of the CD. The Windows version will have a large W on the CD face.

    • Imported EPS File and Image Looks Bitmapped

      Problem: You are importing a vectored EPS file and it appears to be bitmapped.

      Solution: It is possible that the image is a bitmap, however, it is more likely that you are using the EPS filter option in the Import or Open function in CorelDRAW. The option will import the file as a bitmap. Select the All Files or Adobe Illustrator option to import the EPS file as a fully editable vector file. Select the Wireframe view to verify that the file is a vector file. A bitmap will display as a shaded grey box with a black outline. A vectored graphic will display as a set of black outlines. Consult pages 82 and 83 for information on converting bitmaps to vectored line artwork.

    • Imported Clip Art Image and Can't Ungroup or Color

      Problem: You have imported a clip art image from a third party CD-ROM and you cannot ungroup or color the image.

      Solution: The image is a bitmap and cannot be colored in CorelDRAW. Use a vectored image from your Smart Designs CD-ROM products or convert the image to vectored line art. Consult pages 82 and 83 for information on converting bitmaps to vectored line artwork.

    • Image Disappears using Import from Clip Art Browser or Click Art Rollup

      Problem: You import an image using the Import from Clip Art Browser or Click Art Rollup and the image on your page disappears when the new image is imported.

      Solution: The image on your page was selected. Both features will replace a selected image with the new image. Deselect the image with your Pick Tool before importing.

    • Can Not Import File from Macintosh Formatted Disk or CD

      Problem: You have inserted a diskette or CD-ROM with a Macintosh formatted file and you cannot import the file into CorelDRAW.

      Solution: Windows based computers cannot read Macintosh formatted media. Files saved with a Macintosh do not have Windows files extensions. In order to import a Macintosh file into CorelDRAW, the file must be a file format compatible with CorelDRAW's Import function. In addition you must have a Macintosh file conversion utility such as Mac Drive. A Mac Drive demo is located on the Smart Designer 10 installation CD.

    • Can Not Import Image in Gerber Graphix Advantage/Omega

      Problem: You have created a design in CorelDRAW and you cannot import the file into your Gerber Graphix Advantage or Omega software.

      Solution: Both the Gerber Graphix Advantage and Omega software programs are capable of importing files exported from CorelDRAW as Corel Presentation Exchange version 5 files (CMX). Export the file using the CorelDRAW Export function as a CMX version 5 file. Your exported file can be imported directly into Graphix Advantage or Omega.

  • Printing Problems
    • Can Not Print Spot Color Separations

      Problem: You have created a graphic and cannot print out spot color separations. Your separations are printing out as CMYK (process colors).

      Solution: You must first check the Print Separations option in the CorelDRAW Print functions Separations tab. If spot colors are not present in the Separations window, you have not used spot colors to color the design. You must select the Pantone Matching System Corel 8 color palette from the Window/Color Palettes menu. You must recolor your entire design using spot colors.

    • Can Not Print Half-Tones

      Problem: After coloring an image you cannot print half-tones from your printer.

      Solution: You must use spot colors to create a half-tone. Select the object with your Pick Tool and right mouse-click on the color and select Properties. If you have a spot color (Pantone Matching System) selected you will be able to select the Edit button and enter a value in the Tint field. Select PostScript Options from the Options drop down list. The PostScript Options window will allow you to select a dot type, frequency and angle for your half-tone pattern. You must have a PostScript compatible printer and driver in order to output halftones. This feature is not available in most inkjet printers or less expensive laser printers.     • Only Part of the Image Prints

      Problem: You are printing a graphic and only part of the image is printing.

      Solution: Most likely your image exceeds the printable area that your printer is capable of printing to. Select Show/Printable Area from the View menu to display the printable area for your currently selected printer driver. Resize you image to fit within this area.

    • Artwork Looks Jagged When Printed

      Problem: You scanned in a logo or imported a clip art image and it prints jagged.

      Solution: Your image probably contains a bitmap. Bitmaps will typically print very jagged, especially if the a low resolution image has been scaled up in size. To verify that your image is bitmap, select the Wireframe view in CorelDRAW. A bitmap will display as a shaded grey box with a black outline. A vectored graphic will display as a set of black outlines. The bitmap must be converted to vectored line artwork and cleaned up in order to improve the print quality. Consult pages 82 and 83 for information on converting bitmaps to vectored line artwork.

  • Cutting Problems
    • CoCUT Pro Will Not Launch

      Problem: You have attempted to launch CoCUT Pro using the CoCUT Pro menu or the Knife icon and nothing happens.

      Solution: CoCUT Pro or CorelDRAW are not properly configured or installed. Please consult your CoCUT Pro Quick Start Guide.

    • Design Will Not Cut

      Problem: You are attempting to cut an image and you get an error message in your cut driver or CoCUT Pro.

      Solution: More than likely your image contains a bitmap. Bitmaps cannot be cut because they do not contain vector lines. To verify that your image is bitmap, select the Wireframe view in CorelDRAW. A bitmap will display as a shaded grey box with a black outline. A vectored graphic will display as a set of black outlines. The bitmap must be converted to vectored line artwork and cleaned up before cutting.

    • Outlines Will Not Cut

      Problem: You created an outline around an object and the outline will not cut in your cut driver or CoCUT Pro.

      Solution: Outlines created in CorelDRAW using the Outline Tool are not composed of vector lines. You must convert your outlines to contours using the Convert All Objects to Outlines feature. Owners of CoCUT 10 Pro can use the auto-weld feature to automatically convert outlines to contours.

    • Paths Over-cut in Design

      Problem: You cut a design and paths in the design over-cut each other creating an intersecting path in the artwork.

      Solution: You must weld intersecting paths in the vector lines for the artwork before cutting. With practice, the Weld and Trim functions in CorelDRAW can be used to eliminate intersecting paths. Owners of CoCUT 10 Pro can use the auto-weld feature to automatically weld intersecting paths in your designs.

  • Scanner Problems
    • Nothing Happens When Scanner Activated in Direct Scan in Smart Designer 10.11

      Problem: You click on the Scan button in Direct Scan and nothing happens.

      Solution: You must first install the TWAIN software that was included with your scanner. Once this software has been installed, you must select your scanner by selecting the Select Source option in the File menu of the Direct Scan feature. If you have multiple TWAIN compliant devices such as a digital camera, you can choose between the various devices. Once set, the feature will automatically default to the selected device.

    • Crash During Scanning Process

      Problem: You are scanning an image and your computer crashes or locks up.

      Solution: The scanning process takes up a tremendous amount of computing power. This can result in a crash of your system, especially if you have a low amount of RAM. Trying scanning at a lower resolution such as 150 or 300 dpi. Images greater than 600 dpi are not necessary for scanning logos and line artwork.

    • Excessive Nodes After Tracing Images

      Problem: You have traced an image in CorelTRACE or EuroVECTOR and seem to be producing an excessive amount of nodes.

      Solution: You probably have a poor piece of source artwork and are scanning at too high of resolution. CorelTRACE does not do a good job on low quality images. EuroVECTOR will produce a much better trace on a poor quality image due to the software's clean up capabilities. Scanning the image at 150 or 300 dpi will produce the best results because you will not pick up excessive detail during the scanning process. Any resolution over 600 dpi will produce excessive nodes especially on poor quality artwork.

    • EuroVECTOR Crashes During Scan

      Problem: You are attempting to scan in EuroVECTOR and the program keeps locking up.

      Solution: EuroVECTOR is a 16-bit application. Some 32-bit scanner drivers will cause EuroVECTOR to crash, especially models from Hewlett Packard and Epson. Scan directly into CorelDRAW using the Direct Scan feature. Select the image and launch EuroVECTOR by selecting EuroVECTOR from the Bitmaps menu. The scanned image will be transferred automatically to EuroVECTOR.

    • Can Not Get Scanner to Work

      Problem: You have tried everything and cannot get your scanner to work.

      Solution: Configuring a scanner for the first time can be challenging. After reading the installation instructions for your scanner, contact the technical support hotline for your scanner vendor. You can waste countless hours trying to trouble-shoot a problem that can be solved in minutes over the phone.

    • EuroVECTOR Will Not Launch

      Problem: You select EuroVECTOR from the Bitmaps menu and nothing happens or you get a EuroVECTOR not installed message.

      Solution: You must install EuroVECTOR in order to activate EuroVECTOR in CorelDRAW. If you have installed EuroVECTOR to any directory other than the default directory (C:\WINDOWS\VECTOR), you will have to set the path to the eurovect.exe program in the Smart Designer Organizer. First you must locate EuroVECTOR on your hard drive. Using the Find function under your Windows Start button, search for eurovect.exe on all of your fixed drives. Once you locate the file, make a written note of the path to the file. For example C:PROGRAMS\VECTOR. Launch the Smart Designer Organizer from the Tools menu in CorelDRAW. Select the Configure button in the Organizer. Under Trace Program Settings, highlight Location of optional EUROVECTOR trace program. A button with three dots will appear to the left of his field. Click on the button to open the Browse Folders window. Navigate to the folder containing the eurovect.exe program. Click on OK after highlighting the folder in the list. Exit the configure program and test the setting by selecting EuroVECTOR from the Bitmaps menu.

  • Utility Program Problems
    • Font Expert Will Not Launch

      Problem: You select the Font Expert menu in the Utilities menu and nothing happens or the Font Expert demo launches.

      Solution: The Font Expert CD must be in your primary hard drive in order to access Font Expert. The path to the Font Expert Program must be set correctly in the Smart Designer Organizer in order for Font Expert to work. Launch the Smart Designer Organizer from the Tools menu in CorelDRAW. Select the Configure button in the Organizer. Under Utility Program Settings, highlight FontExpert Program Name and Location. A button with three dots will appear to the left of this field. Click on the button to open the Browse Folders window. Navigate to the folder on the Font Expert CD that contains the file fexpert.exe. Highlight the name of the file in the list and click on OK. Exit the configure program and test the setting by selecting Font Expert from the Utilities menu.

    • Cutter Control Will Not Launch

      Problem: You have installed a cutter control utility software that came with your cutter. You cannot access this software by selecting Cutter Control Panel from the Print\Print Special menu.

      Solution: All Summa Cutters come with the Summa Cutter Control Software. Other cutter suppliers may also include a cutter control software. You can configure Smart Designer to automatically launch this software inside CorelDRAW. You must first install the software that came with your cutter. Launch the Smart Designer Organizer from the Tools menu in CorelDRAW. Select the Configure button in the Organizer. Under Cutter Settings, highlight Use Cutter Control Panel and select Yes, I want to use my cutter control panel from the drop down list. Next highlight Cutter Control Panel. A button with three dots will appear to the left of this field. Click on the button to open the Browse Folders window. Navigate to the folder on your hard drive that contains your cutter control program. For example, the Summa Cutter Control program will be named scutcon.exe. Highlight the name of the file in the list and click on OK. Exit the configure program and test the setting by selecting Cutter Control Panel from the Print\Print Special menu.

    • Job Timer Window Disappears

      Problem: You launch the Job Timer and the Job Timer window has disappeared.

      Solution: It is possible to lose the Job Timer window by changing the resolution of your monitor. The Job Timer will drop off the viewable area if you decrease the resolution of your monitor. Since you cannot see the Job Timer, you cannot select it and move it. You can reset the Job Timer's position in the Smart Designer Organizer. Launch the Smart Designer Organizer from the Tools menu in CorelDRAW. Select the Configure button in the Organizer. Under General Options, highlight Reset Job Timer to the factory default start up position. A button with three dots will appear to the left of this field. Click on the button to reset the Job Timer's position. Select Job Timer from the Utilities/Toolbox menu to verify that the Job Timer's position has been reset.

  • Error Messages
    • Error 86 or 257

      Problem: Error occurs 30 days after activation when latest update of Smart Designer X3 is not installed.

      Solution: Install update for Smart Designer X3

      Instructions: Important: Smart Designer shares many resources with other applications and require other components of Windows to be updated before the installation of Smart Designer update.
      Required Components: Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player 11 and Corel DRAW X3 version 739. The links listed below will guide you through updates required by Windows and checking for version #’s

      Internet Explorer 7
      Microsoft Windows Updates
      Windows Media Player 11
      Corel Service PacksMake sure you have all Corel Service packs installed before installing Smart Designer X3 .19 update. You can locate version #'s using "Help" and "About" on your menu bar. If your Corel version # ends in 739 you will not need any service packs installed. If you do not have 739 you will need to start with Service Pack 1. If this service pack does not install, don't worry your version of Corel may be newer and will only except new updates. Please proceed with installing the other updates.
      Smart Designer X3 UpdateClick on the Smart Designer X3 Update link, a new window will appear, click "save" and make sure you place it in a location you can find (I would recommend your Desktop).
      Once the file download has completed make sure you close all applications and find the update you just downloaded (the file name should be X3.07.19.exe). When you find the update double click on it and it will start the installer or update process.
      Normally the first screen you will say " Your system lacks the following..." just click next and the update will continue until it's complete.
      After the update installs you will reboot your PC. When you return to your Windows desktop, launch Smart Designer and continue with the activation process.

    • Error 429, 10005

      Problem: You receive a CorelDRAW not found error prior to installation.

      Solution: You must have installed a full version of CorelDRAW 9 or 10 in order to install Smart Designer 10. Smart Designer is not compatible with CorelDRAW 9 Office Edition. This is a limited version of CorelDRAW without the necessary supporting files to run Smart Designer.

    • "Crash During Installation

      Problem: Either your CD-ROM is damaged or you have not turned off your virus protection software.

      Solution: Turn off your virus protection software and remove your installation CD. Check the bottom of the CD for scratches or residue. If your CD appears damaged, call Digital Art Solutions Tech Support at 480-894-2953 for a replacement CD. If the CD is not damaged, attempt the installation with your virus protection turned off.

    • "Not Enough Disk Space" Message

      Problem: Your receive an message telling you that you do not have enough disk space to install CorelDRAW or Smart Designer.

      Solution: You must free up some space on your hard drive before attempting to install the software. Try deleting your temporary Internet files from the Internet Explorer Internet Options menu or uninstall any unnecessary programs.

  • Activation Code Problems
    • Prompted to Call DAS for an Activation Code During Web Activation

      Problem:You attempted to activate Smart Designer over the web and you were prompted to call Digital Art Solutions for an activation code.

      Solution: You are limited to 3 web activations per year (starting at your original invoice date). After 3 yearly web activations, you will be prompted to call Digital Art Solutions to receive any new codes.

    • "Activation Code Number Does Not Work

      Problem: You called for an activation code and Smart Designer will not accept your new code.

      Solution:Make sure that you are entering zeros instead of the letter O or vice versa. You may also have given the operator an incorrect location code. Call Digital Art Solutions Tech Support at 480-894-2953.

    • Can Not Activate Over Web

      Problem: You are attempting to activate Smart Designer over the web and cannot access the activation web page.

      Solution: Make sure that you are connected to the Internet. In addition, you must enable any firewall software on your computer allow Smart Designer to access the Internet. In addition you must have Internet Explorer version 4 or higher in order to use this feature. If you still cannot activate over the Internet call Digital Art Solutions Tech Support at 480-894-2953.

    • Web Activation Page Will Not Accept Control ID Numbers

      Problem: You are attempting to activate Smart Designer over the web and the activation web page will not accept your Control ID numbers.

      Solution:Make sure that you have entered both numbers exactly as they are printed in the inside front cover of your manual. If you still cannot activate over the Internet call Digital Art Solutions Tech Support at 480-894-2953.

  • Problems Starting Smart Designer 10.11
    • "Demo Has Expired" Message

      Problem:You receive a message indicating that your Smart Designer demo period has expired.

      Solution: The Smart Designer Demo period will expire 30 days from your installation day. See page 22 for instructions on activating Smart Designer. If your demo period has expired the first time you launch the program, you must turn the Regional Setting to English (United States) in the Windows system Control Panel. Canadian and European settings place the day before month causing Smart Designer to expire prematurely.

    • Set Back Date on My Computer and Smart Designer Will Not Load

      Problem: You set back the date on your computer in order to get more time on your demo period and now Smart Designer will not load.

      Solution: By tampering with your date setting, Smart Designer's demo period will expire prematurely. This is part of Smart Designer's copy protection scheme. You must activate Smart Designer to continue using the program. See page 22 for instructions on activating Smart Designer.

    • After Reformatting Hard Drive, Prompted for New Activation Code

      Problem: You reformatted your hard drive and are now prompted for a new activation code after installing Smart Designer.

      Solution: Part of Smart Designer's activation information was deleted when you reformatted your drive. See page 22 for instructions on re-activating Smart Designer.

    • Prompted for New Activation Code After Installing on New Computer

      Problem: You installed Smart Designer on a new computer and are prompted for a new activation code.

      Solution: Each individual computer must be activated separately. Your activation code will only unlock a single computer. See page 22 for instructions on receiving an additional activation code for Smart Designer.

    • Nothing Happens When Smart Designer Icon is Double-Clicked

      Problem: You double-click the Smart Designer Desktop Icon and nothing happens.

      Solution: Either CorelDRAW is not properly installed or Smart Designer did not complete installing. Launch CorelDRAW by itself to verify that CorelDRAW is working properly. Double-click the Smart Designer desktop icon with CorelDRAW open. If Smart Designer does not load, reinstall Smart Designer. Make sure that your virus protection software has been turned off before reinstalling. You do not have to uninstall the previous version before reinstalling.

    • Get "Unable to Subclass Window" Error Message When Starting Smart Designer 10.11

      Problem: You double-click the Smart Designer Desktop Icon and you get a message “Unable to Subclass Window” and the program will not finish loading into CorelDRAW.

      Solution: There may be a timing glitch due to a slower processor on your computer. Smart Designer and CorelDRAW need to open at the same time and link together. Typically this error occurs when you have multiple programs open or you have a slower processor (Under 800 Mhz). Close CorelDRAW and any other open programs and try launching Smart Designer again. If this does not work, launch CorelDRAW by itself and open a new document. Double-click on the Smart Designer icon on your desktop to load Smart Designer and link the two programs.

    • You have Stahl's Drawmate Installed and Smart Designer will Not Open

      Problem: You have Stahl’s Drawmate 9 or 10 installed on your computer, and Smart Designer will not open.

      Solution:When Drawmate was installed, it modified some of the source code for CorelDRAW. This modification may prevent Smart Designer from running. You must completely uninstall Drawmate and CorelDRAW. Reinstall CorelDRAW to restore the modified files and launch Smart Designer. You may need to reset the Smart Designer menus in the Smart Designer welcome screen by clicking on Reset Menus. Drawmate and Smart Designer can not be installed at the same time on any computer.

  • Menu and Display Problems
    • Graphics in CorelDRAW Appear Shaded or Dull

      Problem: Your graphics in CorelDRAW appear shaded or dull. Colors do not appear solid and have a dotted pattern.

      Solution: The display settings for your monitor are set to 256 colors or lower. You must change your display setting in the Windows Control Panel. Right mouse-click on any blank space on your Windows desktop. Select the Properties option. Under the Settings option you should change your High Color (16 bit) or True Color (32 bit). Your Screen Area should be a minimum of 800 x 600 pixels. You may be prompted to restart your computer after applying the changes.

    • Color Palette is Gone

      Problem: Your color palette has disappeared from the right side of your screen.

      Solution: It is possible to undock your color palette and reposition it as a floating window on your screen. If you click on the X on the palette, it will close the palette and disappear. To restore the palette, select a color palette (Pantone Matching System Corel 8 is recommended) by selecting Color Palettes from the Window menu. If the palette appears as a floating window, drag the window to right side of your screen with your left mouse button. It will dock against the right side of the main CorelDRAW window.

    • CorelDRAW Toolbox or Property Bar is Missing

      Problem:Your CorelDRAW Toolbar or Property Bar has vanished.

      Solution: Your have accidentally undocked your bar or have unchecked the option for viewing the bar. Right mouse click on the blank grey area next to the Help menu. Verify that your Toolbox or Property Bar option is checked. Check any desired bar that you would like to view in your workspace. If the bar or toolbox appears as a floating window, drag the window to the desired location of your screen with your left mouse button. It will dock against the main CorelDRAW window. You can press F8 on your keyboard when launching CorelDRAW to reset your workspace back to the factory defaults and restore your Toolbox or Property Bar.

    • Smart Designer or CorelDRAW Workspace is Corrupted

      Problem: Your Smart Designer or CorelDRAW workspace is completely out of order or is displaying gibberish.

      Solution: It is possible to accidentally rearrange your workspace or corrupt a CorelDRAW workspace. You can restore the workspace back to the original condition. Make sure Smart Designer and CorelDRAW are closed. Launch CorelDRAW by itself while holding down the F8 key on your keyboard. When prompted to overwrite the current workspace with the default workspace, select Yes. When the new workspace appears, uncheck the box Show this Welcome Screen at Startup. Select Options from the Tools menu. Under Workspace, highlight Smart Designer 10 and select the Delete button. Exit CorelDRAW. Select the Digital Art Solutions program group by selecting your Start Button and Programs. Select Reset Smart Designer Menus. Launch Smart Designer to restore the Smart Designer menus in the default CorelDRAW workspace.

  • CorelDRAW Problems
    • CorelDRAW Partially Loads Then Hangs Up

      Problem: You launch CorelDRAW and the software partially loads and then hangs up at about 60%.

      Solution: You must have a print driver installed in order for CorelDRAW to load properly. End task on CorelDRAW by entering Ctrl/Alt/Delete simultaneously on your keyboard. Select CorelDRAW from the list and end task on the program. Install a print driver for your computer and reboot. You may also experience this problem if your printer is turned off or you have a networked printer as you default printer. Turn on your printer or change you default printer in your Windows System Control Panel to a printer that is directly connected to your computer. You can choose a different printer in the CorelDRAW Print windows after changing the default printer. For more information on this problem consult the http://venus.corel.com/kbsearch/.

    • Can't Figure Out How to Do Something in CorelDRAW

      Problem:You are stuck trying to figure out how to do something in CorelDRAW

      Solution: CorelDRAW has both a Tutorial and Help Index. Try the Help Index first from the Help menu. If you are experiencing great difficulty in CorelDRAW, we strongly recommend running through the CorelTUTOR from the Help menu.

    • Resize Object with Outline and Object Distorts

      Problem:Your object or text has an outline. When you resize the graphic, the outline stays the same width and distorts the image.

      Solution:The outline has not been set to resize with the graphic. Right mouse-click on the object or group of objects. Select Properties and the Outline tab. Check the box for Scale with Image and click Apply.

    • Tried Coloring Clip Art or Scanned Image and Will Not Color

      Problem:You try to ungroup and color an image in CorelDRAW and nothing happens.

      Solution:Your image is most likely a scan or bitmap. It must be converted to vectored line art before you can color it. To verify that you image is bitmap, select the Wireframe view in CorelDRAW. A bitmap will display as a shaded grey box with a black outline. A vectored graphic will display as a set of black outlines.

    • CorelDRAW Keeps Crashing

      Problem: During operation, CorelDRAW frequently crashes.

      Solution:There are several reasons that CorelDRAW may crash. These steps can be taken in order to get CorelDRAW to function properly. 1) You do not have enough RAM or processing power on your computer. Check the minimum system requirements on pages 12 and 13. Upgrade your computer system or purchase a new computer. 2) You do not have the latest version of CorelDRAW installed. Consult pages 20 and 21 for information on installing CorelDRAW service packs. 3) Your hard drive is badly fragmented. Consult the Windows help system under your Start Button for instructions for defraggmenting your hard drive. 4) CorelDRAW did not install properly. Uninstall and reinstall CorelDRAW. 5) Other software may be conflicting with CorelDRAW. Consult Corel Tech Support at www.corel.com. 6) You have a serious problem with your Windows operating system. Consult technical support for your computer vendor.

    • Crash Recovery Wizard Opens in CorelDRAW

      Problem: The CorelDRAW 10 Recovery Wizard keeps coming up in CorelDRAW.

      Solution: This feature was designed to allow you to save any file in the event that CorelDRAW crashes. Follow the instructions on-screen to save your work. See the previous solution for the proper operation of CorelDRAW.

    • Can Not Save File in CorelDRAW

      Problem: You cannot save a file in CorelDRAW. You get an error message when attempting to save.

      Solution: This is a bug in CorelDRAW 9 or 10 that occurs with some files. You do not have to lose your work. Export your image using the CMX (Corel Presentation Exchange) option. Import the file back into CorelDRAW and try saving the imported file.

    • Text Does Not Stay On Path When File is Opened or Imported

      Problem: You are opening or importing a file and the text has detached from the path.

      Solution: This is an intermittent bug in both CorelDRAW versions 9 and 10 when importing or opening files save down to an older version of CorelDRAW. You must ungroup the design, select the text and reattach it to the path using the Fit Text to Path feature in the Text menu.

  • Font Problems
    • No Fonts in Font List

      Problem:You launch CorelDRAW and no fonts appear in your fonts list.

      Solution:Too many fonts are installed on your system. Once you exceed CorelDRAW's font limit (around 900 fonts), the software will stop loading fonts when it is launched. You must reduce the number of fonts on your system by deleting fonts in your Windows Control Panel. Do not delete any font highlighted in red, as these are your Windows system fonts. We highly recommend installing and using the Bitstream Font Navigator software that was included with CorelDRAW to install and uninstall fonts. Bitstream Font Navigator was installed with CorelDRAW 10 and can be accessed from the Utilities menu. CorelDRAW 9 users must install Bitstream Font Navigator during a custom installation (see pages 14 and 15). You can install Bitstream Font Navigator after installing CorelDRAW 9. Perform a Custom Installation and select only the option for installing Font Navigator under Productivity Tools.

    • Can Not Install PostScript Type 1 Fonts

      Problem:You can not install Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts.

      Solution: You must use Adobe Type Manager to install Type 1 fonts. This software does not come with your Windows operating system unless you have Windows 2000. You can download Adobe Type Manager Lite free of charge from www.adobe.com.

    • Open File and Get Font Substitution Message

      Problem:You get a font substitution error when opening a design or template in CorelDRAW.

      Solution: The font required for your design or template has not been installed. You can either substitute another font style or install the proper font. If the file is from a Smart Designs CD-ROM product, consult the manual for that product in order to properly install the fonts required for the templates.

    • Can Not Edit Text

      Problem: You ungroup the design and cannot edit the text.

      Solution: The text in the design has been converted to curves or is a drawing. You will not be able to edit this text. The only solution is to delete the existing text elements and replace them with new text. Note: Some designs in the Designs category in Smart Templates Volume 1 have non-editable text. These designs can be imported and used as clip art, but cannot be edited as templates.

  • Problems with Smart Templates
    • Click on Template and Nothing Happens

      Problem: You select a Smart Template in the Smart Designer Templates feature and nothing happens or you get a “template not installed” message.

      Solution: Your template has not been installed to your hard drive. Consult the manual for your templates volume for installation instructions. You may also place the CD for your template volume in your drive to access the template from the CD (this feature does not work with Smart Templates Volume 1).

    • Click on Template and Receive Font Substitution Message

      Problem: You get a font substitution error when opening a Smart Template in CorelDRAW.

      Solution: The font required for your design or template has not been installed. You can either substitute another font style or install the proper font. If the file is from a Smart Designs CD-ROM product, consult the manual for that product in order to properly install the fonts required for the templates.

    • Can Not Edit Text in Template

      Problem: You are not given the option of editing the text in the template

      Solution: The text in the design has been locked or has been converted to curves. You can manually ungroup the design and attempt to edit the text.

    • Can Not Import Clip Art Image into Template

      Problem: You are not given the option of changing a clip art element in a template.

      Solution: This element is a locked element in the design. After changing the text in the template, ungroup the design. You can manually delete and replace the clip art.

    • Can Not Locate Template from Smart Templates 1 Binder

      Problem: You can not locate a template from the Smart Templates Volume 1 binder in the Smart Designer Templates feature.

      Solution: Your template is a sample design and cannot be edited as a Smart Template. Sample designs are located in the tabbed section entitled Designs. Insert your Smart Designer 10 CD in your drive. You can access the designs as clip art using the Import from Clip Art Browser feature. The category name will correspond to the tabs in the Smart Templates Volume 1 binder.

  • Problems Importing or Opening Files
    • Get Database Error When Using Import from Clip Art Browser, Click Art Rollup or Organizer in Smart Designer 10.11

      Problem: You get a database error when using the Import from Clip Art Browser, Click Art Rollup or Organizer.

      Solution: The database drivers that are required for these features are not installed. Normally these files are part of your Windows operating system. To install the database drivers, insert the Smart Designer 10 installation CD in your drive. Select the Digital Art Solutions program group by selecting your Start Button and Programs. Select Install Database Drivers.

    • Smart Designs CD is Not Recognized in Clip Art Browser or ClickArt Rollup

      Problem: A Smart Designs brand CD-ROM is not recognized in the Import from Clip Art Browser or ClickArt Rollup.

      Solution: The drive letter for your primary CD-ROM drive does not match the drive letter in the Import from Clip Art Browser or ClickArt Rollup Features. Open the Import from Clip Art Browser or ClickArt Rollup and select the correct drive letter from the drop down list.

    • Bad Disk Error When Importing from EPS Clip Art Library or Smart Templates 2

      Problem: You receive a bad disk error when attempting to import artwork from the EPS Clip Art Library or Smart Templates Volume 2 CDs.

      Solution: You are attempting to import from the Mac version of the CD-ROM. Eject the CD and insert the Windows version of the CD. The Windows version will have a large W on the CD face.

    • Imported EPS File and Image Looks Bitmapped

      Problem: You are importing a vectored EPS file and it appears to be bitmapped.

      Solution: It is possible that the image is a bitmap, however, it is more likely that you are using the EPS filter option in the Import or Open function in CorelDRAW. The option will import the file as a bitmap. Select the All Files or Adobe Illustrator option to import the EPS file as a fully editable vector file. Select the Wireframe view to verify that the file is a vector file. A bitmap will display as a shaded grey box with a black outline. A vectored graphic will display as a set of black outlines. Consult pages 82 and 83 for information on converting bitmaps to vectored line artwork.

    • Imported Clip Art Image and Can't Ungroup or Color

      Problem: You have imported a clip art image from a third party CD-ROM and you cannot ungroup or color the image.

      Solution: The image is a bitmap and cannot be colored in CorelDRAW. Use a vectored image from your Smart Designs CD-ROM products or convert the image to vectored line art. Consult pages 82 and 83 for information on converting bitmaps to vectored line artwork.

    • Image Disappears using Import from Clip Art Browser or Click Art Rollup

      Problem: You import an image using the Import from Clip Art Browser or Click Art Rollup and the image on your page disappears when the new image is imported.

      Solution: The image on your page was selected. Both features will replace a selected image with the new image. Deselect the image with your Pick Tool before importing.

    • Can Not Import File from Macintosh Formatted Disk or CD

      Problem: You have inserted a diskette or CD-ROM with a Macintosh formatted file and you cannot import the file into CorelDRAW.

      Solution: Windows based computers cannot read Macintosh formatted media. Files saved with a Macintosh do not have Windows files extensions. In order to import a Macintosh file into CorelDRAW, the file must be a file format compatible with CorelDRAW's Import function. In addition you must have a Macintosh file conversion utility such as Mac Drive. A Mac Drive demo is located on the Smart Designer 10 installation CD.

    • Can Not Import Image in Gerber Graphix Advantage/Omega

      Problem: You have created a design in CorelDRAW and you cannot import the file into your Gerber Graphix Advantage or Omega software.

      Solution: Both the Gerber Graphix Advantage and Omega software programs are capable of importing files exported from CorelDRAW as Corel Presentation Exchange version 5 files (CMX). Export the file using the CorelDRAW Export function as a CMX version 5 file. Your exported file can be imported directly into Graphix Advantage or Omega.

  • Printing Problems
    • Can Not Print Spot Color Separations

      Problem: You have created a graphic and cannot print out spot color separations. Your separations are printing out as CMYK (process colors).

      Solution: You must first check the Print Separations option in the CorelDRAW Print functions Separations tab. If spot colors are not present in the Separations window, you have not used spot colors to color the design. You must select the Pantone Matching System Corel 8 color palette from the Window/Color Palettes menu. You must recolor your entire design using spot colors.

    • Can Not Print Half-Tones

      Problem: After coloring an image you cannot print half-tones from your printer.

      Solution: You must use spot colors to create a half-tone. Select the object with your Pick Tool and right mouse-click on the color and select Properties. If you have a spot color (Pantone Matching System) selected you will be able to select the Edit button and enter a value in the Tint field. Select PostScript Options from the Options drop down list. The PostScript Options window will allow you to select a dot type, frequency and angle for your half-tone pattern. You must have a PostScript compatible printer and driver in order to output halftones. This feature is not available in most inkjet printers or less expensive laser printers.     • Only Part of the Image Prints

      Problem: You are printing a graphic and only part of the image is printing.

      Solution: Most likely your image exceeds the printable area that your printer is capable of printing to. Select Show/Printable Area from the View menu to display the printable area for your currently selected printer driver. Resize you image to fit within this area.

    • Artwork Looks Jagged When Printed

      Problem: You scanned in a logo or imported a clip art image and it prints jagged.

      Solution: Your image probably contains a bitmap. Bitmaps will typically print very jagged, especially if the a low resolution image has been scaled up in size. To verify that your image is bitmap, select the Wireframe view in CorelDRAW. A bitmap will display as a shaded grey box with a black outline. A vectored graphic will display as a set of black outlines. The bitmap must be converted to vectored line artwork and cleaned up in order to improve the print quality. Consult pages 82 and 83 for information on converting bitmaps to vectored line artwork.

  • Cutting Problems
    • CoCUT Pro Will Not Launch

      Problem: You have attempted to launch CoCUT Pro using the CoCUT Pro menu or the Knife icon and nothing happens.

      Solution: CoCUT Pro or CorelDRAW are not properly configured or installed. Please consult your CoCUT Pro Quick Start Guide.

    • Design Will Not Cut

      Problem: You are attempting to cut an image and you get an error message in your cut driver or CoCUT Pro.

      Solution: More than likely your image contains a bitmap. Bitmaps cannot be cut because they do not contain vector lines. To verify that your image is bitmap, select the Wireframe view in CorelDRAW. A bitmap will display as a shaded grey box with a black outline. A vectored graphic will display as a set of black outlines. The bitmap must be converted to vectored line artwork and cleaned up before cutting.

    • Outlines Will Not Cut

      Problem: You created an outline around an object and the outline will not cut in your cut driver or CoCUT Pro.

      Solution: Outlines created in CorelDRAW using the Outline Tool are not composed of vector lines. You must convert your outlines to contours using the Convert All Objects to Outlines feature. Owners of CoCUT 10 Pro can use the auto-weld feature to automatically convert outlines to contours.

    • Paths Over-cut in Design

      Problem: You cut a design and paths in the design over-cut each other creating an intersecting path in the artwork.

      Solution: You must weld intersecting paths in the vector lines for the artwork before cutting. With practice, the Weld and Trim functions in CorelDRAW can be used to eliminate intersecting paths. Owners of CoCUT 10 Pro can use the auto-weld feature to automatically weld intersecting paths in your designs.

  • Scanner Problems
    • Nothing Happens When Scanner Activated in Direct Scan in Smart Designer 10.11

      Problem: You click on the Scan button in Direct Scan and nothing happens.

      Solution: You must first install the TWAIN software that was included with your scanner. Once this software has been installed, you must select your scanner by selecting the Select Source option in the File menu of the Direct Scan feature. If you have multiple TWAIN compliant devices such as a digital camera, you can choose between the various devices. Once set, the feature will automatically default to the selected device.

    • Crash During Scanning Process

      Problem: You are scanning an image and your computer crashes or locks up.

      Solution: The scanning process takes up a tremendous amount of computing power. This can result in a crash of your system, especially if you have a low amount of RAM. Trying scanning at a lower resolution such as 150 or 300 dpi. Images greater than 600 dpi are not necessary for scanning logos and line artwork.

    • Excessive Nodes After Tracing Images

      Problem: You have traced an image in CorelTRACE or EuroVECTOR and seem to be producing an excessive amount of nodes.

      Solution: You probably have a poor piece of source artwork and are scanning at too high of resolution. CorelTRACE does not do a good job on low quality images. EuroVECTOR will produce a much better trace on a poor quality image due to the software's clean up capabilities. Scanning the image at 150 or 300 dpi will produce the best results because you will not pick up excessive detail during the scanning process. Any resolution over 600 dpi will produce excessive nodes especially on poor quality artwork.

    • EuroVECTOR Crashes During Scan

      Problem: You are attempting to scan in EuroVECTOR and the program keeps locking up.

      Solution: EuroVECTOR is a 16-bit application. Some 32-bit scanner drivers will cause EuroVECTOR to crash, especially models from Hewlett Packard and Epson. Scan directly into CorelDRAW using the Direct Scan feature. Select the image and launch EuroVECTOR by selecting EuroVECTOR from the Bitmaps menu. The scanned image will be transferred automatically to EuroVECTOR.

    • Can Not Get Scanner to Work

      Problem: You have tried everything and cannot get your scanner to work.

      Solution: Configuring a scanner for the first time can be challenging. After reading the installation instructions for your scanner, contact the technical support hotline for your scanner vendor. You can waste countless hours trying to trouble-shoot a problem that can be solved in minutes over the phone.

    • EuroVECTOR Will Not Launch

      Problem: You select EuroVECTOR from the Bitmaps menu and nothing happens or you get a EuroVECTOR not installed message.

      Solution: You must install EuroVECTOR in order to activate EuroVECTOR in CorelDRAW. If you have installed EuroVECTOR to any directory other than the default directory (C:\WINDOWS\VECTOR), you will have to set the path to the eurovect.exe program in the Smart Designer Organizer. First you must locate EuroVECTOR on your hard drive. Using the Find function under your Windows Start button, search for eurovect.exe on all of your fixed drives. Once you locate the file, make a written note of the path to the file. For example C:PROGRAMS\VECTOR. Launch the Smart Designer Organizer from the Tools menu in CorelDRAW. Select the Configure button in the Organizer. Under Trace Program Settings, highlight Location of optional EUROVECTOR trace program. A button with three dots will appear to the left of his field. Click on the button to open the Browse Folders window. Navigate to the folder containing the eurovect.exe program. Click on OK after highlighting the folder in the list. Exit the configure program and test the setting by selecting EuroVECTOR from the Bitmaps menu.

  • Utility Program Problems
    • Font Expert Will Not Launch

      Problem: You select the Font Expert menu in the Utilities menu and nothing happens or the Font Expert demo launches.

      Solution: The Font Expert CD must be in your primary hard drive in order to access Font Expert. The path to the Font Expert Program must be set correctly in the Smart Designer Organizer in order for Font Expert to work. Launch the Smart Designer Organizer from the Tools menu in CorelDRAW. Select the Configure button in the Organizer. Under Utility Program Settings, highlight FontExpert Program Name and Location. A button with three dots will appear to the left of this field. Click on the button to open the Browse Folders window. Navigate to the folder on the Font Expert CD that contains the file fexpert.exe. Highlight the name of the file in the list and click on OK. Exit the configure program and test the setting by selecting Font Expert from the Utilities menu.

    • Cutter Control Will Not Launch

      Problem: You have installed a cutter control utility software that came with your cutter. You cannot access this software by selecting Cutter Control Panel from the Print\Print Special menu.

      Solution: All Summa Cutters come with the Summa Cutter Control Software. Other cutter suppliers may also include a cutter control software. You can configure Smart Designer to automatically launch this software inside CorelDRAW. You must first install the software that came with your cutter. Launch the Smart Designer Organizer from the Tools menu in CorelDRAW. Select the Configure button in the Organizer. Under Cutter Settings, highlight Use Cutter Control Panel and select Yes, I want to use my cutter control panel from the drop down list. Next highlight Cutter Control Panel. A button with three dots will appear to the left of this field. Click on the button to open the Browse Folders window. Navigate to the folder on your hard drive that contains your cutter control program. For example, the Summa Cutter Control program will be named scutcon.exe. Highlight the name of the file in the list and click on OK. Exit the configure program and test the setting by selecting Cutter Control Panel from the Print\Print Special menu.

    • Job Timer Window Disappears

      Problem: You launch the Job Timer and the Job Timer window has disappeared.

      Solution: It is possible to lose the Job Timer window by changing the resolution of your monitor. The Job Timer will drop off the viewable area if you decrease the resolution of your monitor. Since you cannot see the Job Timer, you cannot select it and move it. You can reset the Job Timer's position in the Smart Designer Organizer. Launch the Smart Designer Organizer from the Tools menu in CorelDRAW. Select the Configure button in the Organizer. Under General Options, highlight Reset Job Timer to the factory default start up position. A button with three dots will appear to the left of this field. Click on the button to reset the Job Timer's position. Select Job Timer from the Utilities/Toolbox menu to verify that the Job Timer's position has been reset.
